107 Segment Type Specimen Book
hand-bound, sewn signature binding, spray-painted stencils
The segmented displays common on clocks and calculators feature typefaces of compromise. With only 7 or 8 segments, these struggle to render numbers and letters legibly.
The display on the 4-5-6 train line goes for the opposite approach:
maximalism. Its 107 segments are a charming hodgepodge of bold blocks, soft curves, and dozens of triangles and trapezoids.
I stenciled a type specimen book of this font, rendering the alphabet,
numbers, abstracted letters, and a free improvisation within this matrix of segments.
